Nature
Västerås is situated beside one of Sweden’s largest lakes, Lake Mälaren, which has been very significant for the city’s development over many centuries. People have lived here for more than 1,000 years and the lake was a major reason why they chose to settle down and make a living. That’s the way it’s always been and that’s still the way it is today. A city based on industry and knowledge beside this fantastic lake has grown to become the largest lake port in Scandinavia.
A beautiful landscape is mirrored by this wonderful lake. Wooded hillsides, with a mix of pine forests and deciduous forest, meadows and pastureland are all within walking distance of the city. Planned parks and green open spaces for outdoor activities and recreation can be found within the city. Lake Mälaren has a wonderful archipelago with hundreds of islands plus varied bird life and other wildlife. The Swedish right-to-roam public access law offers visitors to Västerås the opportunity to walk freely and experience the fantastic natural surroundings.

The River Svartån flows majestically through the city, dividing it into an east side and a west side, and then runs spectacularly into Lake Mälaren. In Västerås you can see Sweden at its best.
Everyone has the right to enjoy the countryside. We call it The Right to Roam.
The Right to Roam is something that doesn’t exist in many other countries. It is also a great freedom. But our freedom shouldn’t become a lack of freedom for others. The Right to Roam requires responsibility and common sense. Please do not harm the countryside or the wildlife, and please show consideration to landowners and other people in the countryside.
The Right to Roam can be summarised as: Don’t disturb – don’t destroy.
