Castles
There are many castles in Mälardalen. Three in particular around Västerås are well worth a visit. Västerås Castle is situated on the banks of the River Svartån close to where the river flows into Lake Mälaren.
Construction of the castle was probably started in around the 13th century. Major extensions were made to the castle in the 16th century. The castle is today the county governor’s residence. Engsö Castle, situated around 25 km east of Västerås also dates back to the 13th century. According to legend there are plenty of ghosts at Engsö Castle. As night falls, mystical figures emerge from their hiding places and take over the castle.
Tidö Castle is situated around 20 km south west of Västerås. The castle has become well known in Sweden as the setting for the TV series, Riket. The castle dates back to the 17th century and much of it is in original condition. The unusual toy museum attracts many visitors every season.
